Bungo Stray Dogs is an urban fantasy with a sharp hook. A despairing young man crosses paths with a mysterious stranger, who turns out to belong to a detective agency staffed by people whose supernatural powers take on a literary bent. The power designs are clever, and the series uses them to build fights that feel stylish and inventive. The ensemble has strong chemistry, and the banter often carries the scenes. The honest cons: the arcs are uneven, and some lose momentum when the story stretches its mysteries too far. The tone can switch from comedy to grim without much warning, which some readers will find jarring. Still, it is a fun, energetic series with a distinctive identity. If you like stylish supernatural action with a strong group dynamic, this is a good pick. Expect a few lulls between the highs.
