Dorohedoro

Dorohedoro is a strange, loud, and very specific beast of a manga. The setting is a grimy city where sorcerers treat people like test subjects, and the protagonist is a lizard-headed man hunting them with little memory of his own past. The comedy and the grime fight for space on every page, and the jokes land hard, often coming out of nowhere. The world has so many oddball corners that you keep discovering new ideas. The art is dense with texture, with characters who feel like they could walk off the page and start a fight. The downside is that the plot can be hard to follow, with a lot of threads that double back or fade for long stretches. The violence is grisly, so it is not a casual read. If you like your fantasy dirty, weird and a little chaotic, this is a standout. Go in expecting mood and style first, and the story will reward you as it unfolds.
