In a post-apocalyptic world devoid of seasons, where man's golden age of technology ruined the earth and caused science to run amok, four individuals are looking for a door to somewhere better. The premise is a bleak sci-fi prelude in which a small group of wanderers searches for a way out of a broken world. The strength is the atmosphere. The world feels barren and strange, and the mystery of the door gives the story a steady pull. The sense of a ruined civilisation is well sketched. The weaknesses are about length and density. The prelude is short, so its ideas are only introduced, and the world can be hard to follow. Readers wanting a complete story may need the wider series.Recommended for fans of bleak, mysterious sci-fi. Expect a short, atmospheric read that works as a prelude.
