xxxHOLiC is a haunting, stylish supernatural series with a premise that is easy to get lost in. A boy who sees ghosts and spirits seeks help from a mysterious woman, who agrees to aid him only if he works for her in a shop that serves strange and unusual customers. Each chapter becomes its own eerie tale, with wishes, bargains and consequences that unfold like fables. The art is elegant and dreamlike, with compositions that feel carefully composed and deeply atmospheric. The series thinks hard about desire and the price of getting what you want. The honest cons: the episodic structure can feel slow, and the dreamlike mood can be distancing for readers who want clearer stakes. The overarching story takes a long time to take shape. Still, it is a rare, beautiful work for readers who enjoy supernatural tales with depth. If you like stories that trust the reader to sit with ambiguity, this is essential.
