Wandering Son

Two fifth-graders with happy homes and friendly classmates share a secret that makes the ordinary feel impossibly heavy. I found that gentle contrast to be the heart of the book. The story does not rush to explain its characters or turn them into lessons. Instead it watches them closely, through school days, friendships and the awkward silences that come with growing up. The emotional honesty is the greatest strength. Small moments carry enormous weight, and the adults around them are drawn with care rather than caricature. The honest catch is that the pace is deliberately slow and episodic, and readers who want a plot-driven arc may find it drifting. The long run also asks for patience, since the story builds its meaning gradually. Still, it is one of the most sensitive coming-of-age stories you will read, and it rewards a slow, reflective read. If you want a story that listens more than it speaks, start here.
