Urusei Yatsura

Urusei Yatsura opens with an absurd premise. What would you do if an alien princess in a tiger-skin bikini followed you to school every day? Ataru's life has never returned to normal since the volatile extraterrestrial princess Lum fell for him. A wealthy rival, Mendo, adds to his torment, and an unending stream of extraordinary visitors arrives in his classroom. The premise is a cheerful chaos machine built around one boy and his impossible admirers. The series is at its best when its surreal guests and Lum's unstoppable affection collide with Ataru's useless schemes. The comedy is fast and inventive, and the warmth between the characters gives the madness a heart. The weaknesses are episodes that can feel repetitive and some jokes that show their age. Readers who enjoy classic, surreal comedy will find a joyous read. Those wanting a more focused story may find it scattered, though the chaos is hard to resist.
