by Cheong Hae
A charitable count offers to adopt young Kaidel into a life of nobility, and the orphan boy only has to pledge one thing in return: follow the "ember" and seek out the witch that set fire to his childhood village. Raised as a skilled fighter in a family of alchemists, Kaidel now sets out to find the white-haired witch. When he finally encounters a woman with flowing white hair, she is kind and gentle--contrary to the rumors spread by other villagers. Could the sweet Eleanor be the same witch from his nightmares? Between love and vengeance, which will Kaidel choose? (Source: Tappytoon Comics)

A charitable count offers to adopt Kaidel, a young orphan, and give him a life of nobility. The only price is a pledge to follow the ember and seek out the witch who set fire to his childhood village. The premise is a grim fantasy in which a boy's future is built on a promise of revenge and a mystery he must solve. The strength is the atmosphere. The story builds a steady sense of unease, and the mystery of the witch is compelling. Kaidel's inner conflict gives the drama emotional depth. The weaknesses are about tone and pace. The dark themes are heavy from start to finish, and some stretches move slowly. Readers wanting a lighter fantasy may find it bleak.Recommended for fans of dark fantasy mysteries with an emotional lead. Expect a grim, atmospheric read that rewards patience.
