Serial Experiments Lain: The Nightmare of Fabrication

Serial Experiments Lain: The Nightmare of Fabrication is an eighteen-page story from Yoshitoshi ABe. Presented as the missing file from the game, it appears to share continuity with it, while also touching on elements of the anime. The premise is an unsettling piece of the Lain mythos, and its surreal atmosphere sets a quiet dread from the first page. The story's strength is its mood. Fragmented, dreamlike images and themes of memory and identity carry real weight in a few pages. The full-colour pages give the nightmare a striking surface, and the tone stays eerie throughout. The weakness is brevity and dependence. Readers without familiarity with Lain's world will find the story hard to place, and its length leaves little room for development. Fans of the series will find a fascinating addition. Newcomers may find it opaque, though its atmosphere is compelling.
