Ranma ½ is a classic, zany martial-arts romcom with a premise that is still delightfully odd. A boy has been promised by his father to one of three daughters of an old friend, to carry on the family's martial arts school. The girl chosen for him does not seem to like him, he keeps getting into fights, and he has a rather unusual problem: he changes into a girl when splashed with cold water. The gags are inventive, and the ensemble is large and memorable, with each character bringing their own chaos. The fights are lively and playful. The honest cons: some of the fan-service and gags feel dated to modern readers, and the long run can feel repetitive as the same bits return. Some romantic threads drag. Still, it is a classic that shaped the genre and remains great fun. If you like comedy with a wild streak, this is a must-read.
