Rikuo grew up in a house full of yokai, so he always thought they were cool. But the kids in his class talk about yokai like they're bad! When his grandfather announces Rikuo as his chosen heir to run the Nura clan, Rikuo is torn between his human nature and his duties as a yokai. The rest of the clan's not so crazy about a wimpy part-human as their ruler, particularly Gagoze, a high-ranking yokai who would rather eat a human than be ruled by one. (Source: VIZ Media)

Rikuo grows up surrounded by yokai and has to decide what he wants to be. Rin is into that identity hook: half human, half something else, and the choice is his to make. The yokai designs are fun, and the clan politics add flavour to the fights. The run is complete, so the story has room to build. Honest take: the early chapters can feel formulaic, with the usual mentor and rival setup. As the power escalates, the identity theme can get overshadowed by the next big battle. Some side characters are sketched rather than developed, which is a shame given the setting. Still, the central conflict is clear, and the tone is classic shounen at its most earnest. If you like yokai stories with a family-and-duty spin, this is a solid pick. Stick with it past the first volumes.
