My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected is an unusually self-aware light novel. Short version: a cynical student who expects nothing from school life is drawn into an unlikely club. The narration is the main draw. It is witty, cutting and often honest, which gives the story a distinctive voice. The series uses its lead's contrarian streak to examine loneliness, sincerity and the gap between what people say and what they mean. Those themes are the strongest part of the work. The trade-off is pacing. Long digressions can slow the story, and some sections spend more time inside the protagonist's head than the plot requires. His cynicism can also wear thin for readers who want a warmer lead. Still, the cast is well drawn, and the conversations are often sharp. For readers who enjoy introspective school stories with real wit, it is a rewarding pick. Expect a voice that rewards patience.
