Maison Ikkoku takes readers into one of Japan's nuttiest apartment houses. Kyoko is the beautiful and mysterious new manager, and Yusaku is an exam-addled college student drawn to her. Around them are a drunken gossip, a bratty son, a boozy bar hostess and a peeping neighbour. The premise is a cosy, lively ensemble comedy that gives every tenant a distinct voice. The series is at its best when its romance is awkward and tender at once. The slow courtship is full of comic misfires, and the tenants' meddling gives every scene a lively edge. Beneath the laughs is real emotional honesty. The weaknesses are sitcom rhythms that can feel dated to modern readers and a romantic payoff that moves slowly. Fans of warm, character-led comedy will find a classic. Those wanting brisk plotting may find it leisurely, though its heart is hard to resist.
