Bocchi the Rock! is a warm, funny slice-of-life about an anxious girl who wants to be a rock legend but struggles to talk to anyone. She has spent her middle school years shredding on guitar in her room, and when she is suddenly asked to fill in for a band, it feels like her wish has come true, and a nightmare at the same time. The comedy is built on her painfully relatable social anxiety, and the four-panel format keeps the jokes bright and quick. The band scenes are lively, and the music feels alive on the page. The cast is lovable, and each member has a distinct personality. The honest cons: the 4-koma structure can feel repetitive, and many jokes return to the same anxiety beats. The stakes stay modest. Still, it is a heartfelt, funny read that makes you root for everyone. If you like music stories about finding your people, this is a delight.
