Yotsugi Ononoki is a shikigami girl assigned to watch over Koyomi Araragi. Now this dead tsukumogami faces a challenge, and the question is what exactly the struggle is, with her life on the line. The premise is a mystery-comedy novel built around a strange companion and a problem that is not what it first appears. The strength is the voice. The narration is sharp and playful, and the banter between characters is quick and clever. The mystery structure is neat, and the reveals land with a satisfying snap. The weaknesses are about accessibility. Newcomers may find the references and the world's rules hard to keep track of, and the story relies on familiarity with the parent series. Some readers may find the wordplay tiring.Recommended for fans of the Monogatari series who enjoy its quirky, talky style. Expect a clever, chatty read that repays familiarity.
