The Morose Mononokean

Ashiya has spent the first seven days of high school stuck in the infirmary because a youkai has attached itself to him. That premise is an offbeat, funny start, and the series builds its warmth on the strange, affectionate bond between a grumpy boy and the creature that will not leave him alone. The supernatural world is handled with a light touch. The strength is the friendship. The odd pairing is charming, and the youkai's antics give each chapter a playful rhythm. The gentle humour feels sincere. The weaknesses are clear. Some episodes feel repetitive, and the school setting is lightly used. Readers wanting bigger stakes may find the tone too cosy.Recommended for fans of gentle supernatural comedies with an unlikely friendship. Expect a warm, offbeat read.
