Linley is a young noble of a declining, once-powerful clan that once dominated the world. He has large aspirations, and the premise is built on a young man who wants to restore his family's glory. That ambition is the engine of the story, and the series sets its epic scale against a world that has long since moved on.The strength is the drive. Linley's ambition gives each chapter purpose, and the sweeping, epic scope is satisfying. The world feels vast and ancient. The weaknesses are clear. The run is very long, with uneven arcs, and the rise-and-revenge tropes are familiar. Readers wanting a tighter plot may find it sprawling.Recommended for fans of long, ambitious fantasy about restoring a lost legacy. Expect a sweeping, long ride.
