Barrage

In order to save the planet, Astro will have to battle terrifying aliens while learning how to fight from his even more frightening guardian, the exacting knight Tiamat. The premise is an action-fantasy about a reluctant young hero trained by a stern warrior. The strength is the dynamic. The relationship between the boy and his demanding guardian is engaging, and the training scenes are fun. The alien battles are bold and energetic. The weaknesses are about scope. The run is short, so the arc is brief and some battles feel formulaic. Readers wanting a bigger saga may find it quick.Recommended for fans of action with a mentor-and-student dynamic. Expect a brisk, energetic read. The training scenes carry most of the appeal, and the bond between student and guardian grows in a satisfying way.
