Wergelder: in Germanic law, the money paid by a murderer or his family to the victim's family in atonement. That opening sets a thoughtful, historical tone, and the series builds its story on a mysterious debt of blood and the people who must settle it. The idea of atonement gives the violence a serious weight. The strength is the concept. The legal and historical texture is distinctive, and the action is intense and grounded. The moral questions give the story depth. The weaknesses are clear. The violence is intense, and the series is still releasing, so its arc is early.
