Azumi

A period action story about an assassin, set after a major battle in Japan's history. The tone is stark and the world feels lived-in, and the violence is never glamorised. It's a grounded read that trusts its lead to carry the weight. The strength is the restraint. The protagonist is a quiet, intense figure, and the story gives her room to be more than a weapon. The historical backdrop is handled with care, and the missions feel like real jobs with real risks. The art does a lot of work in the quiet panels. The weakness is pace. Between missions the story can slow, and some stretches linger more than they need to. The violence is heavy and frequent, which may be hard for readers who want a lighter action read.If you like period assassin stories with a sober, grounded tone, this is worth a look. Expect a slow burn, and let the lead's intensity build over time.
