Mononoke

The story follows a medicine seller who hunts mononoke, the demons that haunt the world. Before he unsheathes his sword, he must first learn the form, the katachi, of each spirit. The premise is a supernatural series that treats its monsters as puzzles to be understood, not simply defeated. The strength is the atmosphere. The art is striking, with eerie, elegant designs and a strong sense of foreboding. The idea that each spirit must be understood before it can be dealt with gives every case a thoughtful edge. The weaknesses are structural. The episodic format can feel uneven, and a few stories are much bleaker than the rest. Readers wanting a continuous plot may find it scattered.Recommended for fans of atmospheric supernatural stories with a thoughtful tone. Expect a haunting, carefully drawn read.
