Alien Nine

Alien Nine is set in a future where alien invasion is a daily occurrence and everyone must be prepared. Elementary School number nine has assigned three students to fight off the extraterrestrial threat. The premise is an unusual mix of childhood and war, and the image of young pupils fighting an alien menace sets up an unsettling, coming-of-age story. The series is most striking when its quiet school routine collides with the strangeness of the invasion. The atmosphere is eerie and dreamlike, and the children's inner lives give the story a fragile emotional weight. The weaknesses are an oblique strangeness that can feel obscure and child-centred scenes that can be heavy. Readers who enjoy offbeat sci-fi with a psychological edge will find a memorable read. Those wanting straightforward action may find it difficult, though the mood lingers.
