Miaka Yuuki is an ordinary junior-high student who is suddenly spirited into the world of a book, The Universe of the Four Gods. That premise is classic and immediately engaging: a girl who must find her place in a story she has only read. The series builds its adventure on the rules of the world and the bonds that form along the way.The strength is the scope. The world is lush and sweeping, and the ensemble gives the story a rich sense of loyalty and rivalry. Miaka's warmth and determination carry the early chapters. The weaknesses are clear. The romance can feel dated by modern standards, and the long run has arcs that vary in quality. Some readers may find the pacing uneven.Recommended for fans of classic shoujo fantasy with a grand scope. Expect a sweeping, nostalgic ride.
