The Night Without Shadows

When junior knight Roselyn is rescued from the bottom of a cliff after an ambush by an enemy kingdom, her brother Calix is relieved, until he learns that she has lost her memories. The premise is a fantasy drama about trauma, duty and the bond between siblings who must rebuild what was lost. The strength is the emotion. Roselyn's confusion and Calix's fear give the story real weight, and the questions of what happened in the ambush keep the mystery alive. The knightly world is well drawn. The weaknesses are about tone. The mood is sombre from start to finish, and the run is long enough that some stretches slow down. Readers wanting a light story may find it heavy.Recommended for readers who enjoy dark, emotional fantasy about memory and loyalty. Expect a sombre, rewarding read.
