Laritte Brumayer is the illegitimate daughter of a count, and she grew up in an abusive household. As if that were not enough, she is sent to marry Duke Ian Reinhardt. The premise is a reversal of the usual royal romance: the bride starts out with nothing, and her will to survive drives the story. That emotional foundation is the series' strongest hook. The strength is the heroine. Laritte's resilience is compelling, and her relationship with the duke develops through tension and trust rather than instant romance. Full colour gives the castle and the wider world a rich, dramatic look. The weaknesses are real. The abuse backstory is heavy and may be hard to read. The marriage-of-convenience tropes are familiar, and some dragon-tinged elements feel secondary to the romance.Recommended for readers who like emotional royal romances with a survivor at the centre. Be ready for heavy scenes and a slow build.
