Elena Blaise grew up as a count's daughter in a royalist household backing Crown Prince Carlisle. The prince's sudden assassination makes way for the Anti-King Paveluc, who annihilates her family. The premise is a fantasy drama about loss, vengeance and a woman who returns to fight for the crown she lost. The strength is the heroine. Elena's grief and her determination to return make her compelling, and the battles and political intrigue have real weight. The stakes feel high throughout. The weaknesses are about length and tone. The run is long, and some arcs repeat their structure. The darkness is heavy, which may be hard for some readers.Recommended for readers who enjoy dark fantasy about vengeance and royal politics. Expect a grim, rewarding read that rewards patience.
