From the Red Fog

England, the end of the nineteenth century, and a string of gruesome incidents. Rin is hooked by the setup, and the mood is dark from the start. The atmosphere is the big win here: grimy streets, class tension and a sense that something is rotten under the surface. The story is compact, five volumes, so it does not drag. Honest take: this is not comfort reading. The gore and violence are frequent, and some readers will bounce off them hard. The bleak tone leaves little room for relief, and the story leans on shock at times. When the mystery clicks, it clicks well. When it stumbles, it feels like it is chasing the next jolt. If you want dark psychological horror with a strong period feel, it is worth a read. Go in braced, and check the content first.
