Shoujo Manga Shujinkou x Rival-san

Kimura-san wants to get close to her crush, Mizushima-kun, but the beautiful and confrontational Hiyama-san seems determined to stand in the way. The setup borrows the language of shoujo rival stories, and the series knows it. That self-awareness is the hook, and it gives the tension a playful edge. The strength is the comedy. The series enjoys its own tropes, and the exchanges between the rivals are sharp and funny. The protagonist's earnest attempts to win her crush land well, and the story is quick to find new angles on familiar situations. The weaknesses are clear. The bullying themes can sit uneasily with the playful tone, and the romance beats are fairly predictable. Readers wanting a sincere love story may find the meta approach distancing.Recommended for fans of self-aware shoujo comedy who enjoy a rival-heroine twist. Expect playful tension and familiar shapes.
